NOTRE DAME - Br. Alexius (Erwin) Adam, C.S.C., 83, died suddenly in Schubert Villa at Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 10, 1925, one of three children of Andrew and Erna (Grau) Adam. He was baptized at St. Catherine's Church in Milwaukee on December 6, 1925, and confirmed in the same parish, where he also attended elementary school. In 1939 he studied at St.
John's Cathedral High School for three years. A vocation talk influenced him to join the Brothers of Holy Cross. He entered Sacred Heart College in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he completed high school courses and graduated in 1943. He
entered the St. Joseph Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, on August 15, 1943, and made his first vows on February 2, 1945. Four years later, he pronounced his final
vows as a Brother of Holy Cross at Sacred Heart Basilica at Notre Dame on August 16, 1949.
Br. Alexius began his college studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1945. After three years, he was assigned to the faculty at St. Thomas School in Brooklyn, New York, for four years. He then taught at Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, Mississippi, and at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. In 1951 he completed his B.A. studies and graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He started graduate studies and earned a Master of Arts degree from DePaul University in 1960. Br. Alexius' favorite subjects were American History and Latin, and he was noted for his
generosity in extra-curricular activities, particularly in athletics.
In 1953 he joined the faculty at St. Joseph's High School, South Bend, for five years and was the athletic director during that period of time in St. Joe's achievements in sports. In 1958 he moved to Holy Trinity High School in Chicago to teach and serve in many activities for 14 years. In 1972 Br. Alexius returned to St. Joseph High School in South Bend where he served on the staff until 1999, for a total of 32 years of dedicated service to the high school, its student body and the South Bend community.
In 1999 he retired to Columba Hall on the University campus, pursuing his favorite interests, particularly golf. In 2007 he became a resident at Schubert Villa on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, until his death on January 9, 2009. During those retirement years, Br. Alexius devoted many hours to composing a variety of large booklets on topics related to his favorite interests: Spiritual Vignettes and Anecdotes, Nostalgia, Riddles, Great Americans, the American Century, American Calendar, Potpourri, Humor, Word Games and other topics. Members of his community and his friends were sent his latest product each year ... thus having a lasting memory of the talents and efforts of this industrious religious.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 12, at the Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel, Schubert Villa-Dujarie House complex from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will follow at 11:00 AM with interment afterward at the St. Joseph's
Cemetery of the Village.
