Mary "Polly" Adair, the daughter of Cornelius Adair and Elizabeth(Davis)Adair, was born in 1785 at Augusta County, Virginia. She married Peyton Shumate on February 11, 1808 and they eventually moved to Carlisle, Nicholas County, Kentucky where they began their life there by purchasing and running hotel for several years. It was here that they raised six handsome daughters. Later, Peyton moved his family to a farm in Bourbon County where he remained until his death in 1845. After his death, Mary lived with several of her daughters until her death (probably Maysville, Kentucky)in 1869.
