|Birth: ||May 13, 1921, USA|
|Death: ||May 3, 2010|
George Acuff, 88 of Knoxville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, May 3, 2010. He lived his life by the Christian principles and teachings that he so strongly believed and leaves his family a legacy of faith, compassion, and love. He was a member of Alice Bell Baptist Church and previously a 50 year member of Washington Pike Baptist Church where he was ordained a Baptist Deacon and served as Church Treasurer for 35 years.
A graduate of Gibbs High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with his future wife, Jeanette, with whom he shared 60 happy years of marriage. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after 35 years. However, in the years following, he had a full and busy life with his church work, his gardening and beautiful yard, and lovingly caring for his ailing wife until her death in 2002. He worked many years part-time for Stevens Mortuary. During the past 6 years, he was a faithful volunteer at the Baptist Center in Western Heights. For 2 days a week, he served his Lord by helping that community in any way he could in spite of his age and failing health. He always had candy for the children and a smile for everyone. He dearly loved those days at the center. In fact, the last time he drove his car was to the Baptist Center. His life touched so many people, and he will be missed greatly, especially by his family whom he loved so much.
Preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette, and his parents, Rev. Ewin and Beulah Acuff.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Day; and his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Becky Acuff, all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jeff and Michelle Day of Knoxville and Angel and Donnie Shope of Andersonville; great-grand-children, Lauren, Jarryd and Jace Day, Travis, Colby, Caitlin and Chase Shope; sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Billie Hurst of Knoxville; sister, Mary King of Hamilton, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Ruby Acuff of Hamilton, Ohio, Garrett and Jo Acuff of Nampa, Idaho, Gale and Louise Acuff of Cocoa, Florida; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends will meet 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Mortuary and go in procession to Greenwood Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service and interment.
Pallbearers: Gale Acuff, Garrett Acuff, Donnie Shope, Travis Shope, Jeff Day, Jerry Day. Honorary pallbearers: Glen Acuff and Danny Acuff. Full military honors provided by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard.
