Abelardo "Able'' Acosta, age 77, passed away at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Able was born in Loving, New Mexico. He graduated from Carlsbad High School. He achieved a four year letterman in football and in boxing. He attended college in New Mexico State for 2 years.
On December 13, 1950, he married Bea Zuniga and together raised 7 children. He served 3 years in the New Mexico National Guard and 2 years in the U.S. Army, where he trained with the 101st Air Borne serving in the Korean War. Able was awarded an Honorable Discharge on December 1954.
Able owned his own furniture business for 25 years, the last 18 years in Modesto. He was a member of the Modesto City Chapter of the American G.I. Form for 18 years, serving 2 years as Commander. He worked with a small group of men to form the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 1983 and served as President in 1985 and 1986. He was awarded a life time membership. Able also volunteered with the Economic Development sub Committee for 3 years and served on the committee to name the convention center, which is known as the Modesto Centre Plaza, he also served on the Mexican American Political Assn.
He is survived by his wife Bea Acosta of Modesto; sons, Edward Acosta of Berkeley, Joe, Abel and Jacob Acosta, all of Modesto; daughters, Cruz Rodriguez of Modesto, Bella Callahan of Orinda; sisters, Anita Jaquez of Los Angeles, Azusena Rostro of Carlsbad, NM, and Francis Carrasco of Loving, NM; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Clara Acosta; daughter, Clara Espino; grandson, Vince Espino; and brother, George Acosta.
Service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. Burial on Thursday, September 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at San Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine.
