Barbara "Lita" Chavez Acosta, 75, former Garfield resident presently living in Deming passed away Tuesday September 26, 2006 at Mountain View Regional Hospital in Las Cruces.
Visitation will be held at Baca's Funeral Chapels in Deming today from 1 until 4 o'clock. The prayer vigil will be that evening at 7 o'clock at San Isidro Catholic Church in Garfield and the funeral mass will be there Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. The rite of committal and interment will follow at the Garfield Cemetery. Fr. Adrian Luevano, Pastor, will officiate.
She was born April 4, 1931 in Derry to Lino Chavez and Nicolasa Martinez. On August 29, 1959 she married Jesus Acevedo Acosta in Garfield. She was a communicant at San Isidro Catholic Church. As she and Jesus began their life together they opened up their home to many foster children in the Hatch area and volunteered to transport the elderly to medical appointments. She served as a teacher's aid in the public schools for many years. Seven months ago she and her husband moved to Deming to make their retirement home.
Survivors include husband, Jesus of the home; 2 sons, Martin and wife Andrea Acosta, Alamogordo, Lino Chavez, Deming and daughter, Jessica Acosta and companion Jimmy Wilson from Derry; 7 sisters, Belen and Bila Vallejos, Phoenix, AZ, Nico Alderete and Josie and husband, Venacio Herrera, Deming, Lorie and husband Joe Morales, Bayard, Rosie Medina, Albuquerque and Ramona and husband Lewis Silva, Fremont, CA.; 2 brothers, Cruz, Deming, and Jimmy Chavez and wife Lupe, Las Cruces; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Lino and Nicolasa Chavez, 3 sisters, Jenny "Honey" Herrera, Lupe De La O and Belen Chavez; 3 brothers, Lino Chavez II, Eusebio Chavez I and Eusebio Chavez II.
Pallbearers will be Diego and Rodrigo Herrera, Ivan and Fernando Barrio, Manuel Ovalle and Steve Sprunk. Honorary bearers named are Lewis and Mike Silva, Curtis Cooper, Willie Guerra, Joe Morales, Angel Chavez and nieces and nephews.
Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels in Deming.
