At age 14 Walter died of what was thought to be brain trouble due to severe pains in the head. His funeral was large, the pallbearers were his playmates, and his schoolmates each dropped a bouquet onto his grave. Flags were flown at half mast, and the mayor closed his business during the burial hours. Evidently, Walter was a bright, personable boy loved by everyone.
