John B. Abrahms, 85, of West Hartford and Beach Park in Clinton, devoted and treasured husband for 59 years of Phyllis B. Abrahms, died on Wednesday, (August 21, 2002) at his summer home. Born in New York City, NY on April 12, 1917, he was educated at DeWitt Clinton High School and the College of the City of New York. Former chairman of the board of Abrahms Agencies, a nationally respected family insurance business, he held both Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter degrees and the distinction of being the first person in the state of Connecticut to receive an insurance consulting license. Within both the industry and the greater community, John received many awards and honors, including the position of past president of the Connecticut Chapter of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Association. The recipient of Brandeis University's Distinguished Community Service Award and the University of Hartford's University Medal, he also was a recipient of the National Conference's Human Relations Award for fostering relations between Jews and Christians, United States Mixed Doubles Table Tennis Champion, and the fifth ranked table tennis player in the world, John was inducted by the Jewish Historical Society into the Hall of Fame for Jewish Athletes and Sports Figures. John was past president of the Hebrew Home and Hospital and a member of its Executive and Finance Committees for more than 50 years, a life member of Greater Hartford Jewish Federation, a former member of the Board of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, a Regent and an Honorary Regent of the University of Hartford, and a past board member of the Hartford Stage. Besides his cherished wife, Phyllis, he leaves his son, Marc Abrahms; his daughter, Sally Abrahms, and her husband, David Rosenthal of Brookline, MA. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Aaron, Max, Zachary, and Simon Abrahms and Anna, Nicholas, and Julia Rosenthal. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Dr. Eliot Robert Abrahms. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Intelligent, warm and nurturing, a man with a marvelous, endearing smile, deeply loving and deeply loved, John was the center of his entire family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 23, at 12:30 p.m. Temple Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., Hartford. The internment will be held at the Beth Israel Cemetery, 153 Ward St., Hartford. Friends may call following the internment and on Saturday and Sunday at John and Phyllis' home, 47 Brookside Blvd., West Hartford.
