WEST POINT -- Funeral services for Michael Abolt, 18, West Point, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's church in West Point with the Rev. Francis Lenoch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, West Point.
A temporary Fort Madison city employee, Mr. Abolt was asphyxiated, apparently by sewer gas, Tuesday in a manhole in Fort Madison while attempting to rescue a fellow worker from the manhole.
He was born Nov. 7, 1957, in St. Paul and had been a resident of West Point for 16 years. A 1976 graduate of Marquette high school in West Point, he was a member of St. Mary's church.
He is survived by his parents, John and Clarice Hellweg Abolt; four brothers, Marty, Ronald, Randy and Bernard, all at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Abolt of St Paul and Mrs. Marie Hellweg of Houghton.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather.
The rosary will be recited at 8 this evening at the Link Funeral home in West Point. The body will be taken to St. Mary's church Thursday morning where it will lie in state until time of service.
There will be a prayer service by students of Marquette high school immediately following the rosary.
