William Gilbert Abernathy came to Palo Pinto with his parents in 1880, when he was five years old.
Ira Belle Maxwell married William Gilbert Abernathy on 23 December 1900 at Palo Pinto County, Texas.
He lived here most of his life, moving away temporarily to serve as a Texas Ranger for a time. He was a Baptist.
He was sheriff of Palo Pinto County for eight terms, from 1914 to 1930.
Survived by Mrs. Burl McClellan of Stamford; Mrs. F. A. McMillan of Amarillo, J. B. Abernathy of Dallas and Bill Ray Abernathy of Houston.
Sheriff Gib Abernathy was the first person to cross the first river bridge in Palo Pinto County.
W. Gib Abernathy and his wife, Belle, had seven children.

W. Gib Abernathy, 78, a Texas peace officer for 40 years, died at his home in Palo Pinto. He was the father of Joe B. Abernathy of Dallas.
