W.G. Abernathy married Maria Gaines on 15 June 1918 at Fort Worth, Texas. They had lived in Palo Pinto County all of their married life.
Services for W.G. Abernathy were held at FIrst Baptist Church at Palo Pinto, Texas officiated by Rev. W.H. McQueary, pastor. The Masonic Lodge was in charge of graveside services.
W.G. Abernathy passed away at the home of a daughter where he had been visting.
W.G. Abernathy moved to Texas in 1899.
Bill Abernathy was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of the 36th Division and was wounded at France in 1918. He received the Purple Heart. He was a Palo Pinto groceryman, served as Palo Pinto County Tax Assessor for a number of years and was Postmaster of Palo Pinto, Texas for seven years.
Survived by his wife; one daughter - Mrs. Lela Shultz, two grandchildren; three brothers - David Abernathy, G.L. Abernathy, Tom Abernathy; two sisters - Mrs. Ida Greer and Mrs. Berta Benge.
His son, Lt. Billy Abernathy was killed in World War II and the Abernathy - Couger Post of the American Legion of Palo Pinto was named in his honor.
