Born in Kings Mountain, son of the late Wilburn Norman and Vada Pruitt Abernathy he was also preceded in death by a son, Norman James Abernathy Jr.
He graduated from Kings Mountain High School and attended San Bernardino Community College in Calif., West Virginia University in W. Va. and North Florida Academy of Real Estate in Jacksonville, Fla. He retired from AT&T after a distinguished 30 year career, serving numerous positions within AT&T departments in the capacity of executive management. The last 10 years of his career with AT&T, he served as district operations manager of AT&T's special services of Florida. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and a member of the American Legion Post 155 in Kings Mountain. A life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and he was a member of the Senior Golfers of Cleveland County.
He is survived by his wife, of 53 years, Mary Ellen Baker Abernathy of Grover; daughter, Mary Catherine Schmieg of Plano, Texas; grandsons, Shawn, Michael and Matthew Schmieg of Plano, Texas, James Patrick Abernathy of Wilson; Granddaughters: Mary Kristen Jester and husband, Jason Jester, McKinney, Texas Kimberly Abernathy, Wilson, North Carolina
Great-granddaughters, Mary Christina Schmieg of McKinney, Texas and Cate Olivia Schmieg of Allen, Texas; great-grandson, Joseph Clayton Jester of McKinney, Texas; sister, Mary Flad and her husband, Joe of Lakeland, Fla.; mother-in-law, Ruby Hughes Baker of Kings Mountain and brother-in-law, Philip Baker of Kings Mountain
Graveside Service: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain
