David Charles Abernathey passed away July 10, 2008 at his home with his wife and loving family by his side at the age of 67.

Dave was born on December 3, 1940 in Minot, North Dakota to Charley and Cora (Kortgaard) Abernathey and was the oldest of three children. Dave was raised on a farm in Nedrose Township, rural Minot, ND. He attended a one-room country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Minot High School in 1958.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 28, 1958 in Minneapolis, MN and served as a Fire Control Operator at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Command in Twenty Nine Palms, CA. He was honorably discharged from military service on August 27, 1961. He then worked on missile sites before attending Wahpeton State School of Science where he received a degree in refrigeration, air conditioning and heating.

He married Jean (Carol) Nowatzki on May 8, 1965 in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND. Together, they raised three children in Grand Forks. During his career, he worked for various heating and sheet metal shops in Grand Forks until 1992 when he was forced to retire because of ill health.

Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and helping out his friends. His true happiness came while spending time with family and friends at his cabin on Maple Lake. Dave loved following his children and later his grandchildren's activities. He was an active member at St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Michael's Men's Club, Knights of Columbus Council 1260, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Post 157 and Sheet Metal Worker's Union.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean of 43 years; children, Bryan (Michelle), Darrin (Raelynn), and Lisa (Carter) Narum all of Grand Forks; five grandchildren, Scott, Michael, Brooke, Brady, and Dylan; a brother, James (Polly) of Minot, ND and a sister, Carole Abernathey of West Fargo, ND; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He was blessed with many good friends and will truly be missed by all that knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to either, the St. Michael's Geothermal Fund, St. Michael's Bridge Builders or St. Michael's Foundation, 520 Sixth Street North, Grand Forks, ND 58203
