James H. Abell

James Henry Abell was born in 1829, the son of Uel Abell and Elizabeth Satchwell Abell, both of whom died when their son was very young. James Henry Abell's paternal grand- parents were Arthur Abell and Ann Abell. Since his parents died so early, James Henry Abell did not have the advantage of higher educa tion, in fact he came to Johnston County for the purpose of improving his education. After closing his school studies he commenced the study of law with C.B. Sanders, and he obtained his license to practice law in 1856. For more than thirty-five years he was one of the leading lawyers of Johnston County. He served two terms as Clerk of Superior Court, ending in December 1882, after which he resumed the practice of law.


On 24 January 1856 James Henry Abell married Lucy J. Etheridge (b 1832 d 1876). To this union six children were born: Edward Stanley Abell, Mary Louise Abell, William Uel Abell, Ida Abell, Emma Abell and Alice Abell. -The Heritage of Johnston County, North Carolina 1985
