Cornelius was born to Joshua and Ann (Mills) Abell at the Rolling Fork Settlement, Washington (now Calvary, Marion County,) Kentucky.Cornelius was the grandson of Samuel, IV and Susanna (Spalding) Abell and Justinian and Mary (Dant) Mills.

Cornelius married Theresa "Treacy" (Wimsatt), daughter of Joseph Wimsattt. Their marriage bond dated Nov. 22, 1822 can be found in the Marriage Book #1, page 212 in the Washington County Clerk's Office in Springfield, Kentucky.

They were the parents of, at least: Sarah Ann Wimsatt, 1829-xxxx; Mary Elizabeth Abell, 1831-xxxx; Lucinda Jane Abell, 1832-xxxx; Cornelius Wimsatt Abell, 1834-1898; Irvin Abell, 1823-1885; Michael Bernard Abell, 1836-xxxx; Samuel W. Abell, 1837-xxxx; Susan Amanda Abell, 1839-xxxx; and Richard Edward "Edward" Abell, 1841-1915.
