Mary L. Abell (1890-1979) was the third daughter and the last of four children of Caleb (1843-1897) and Harriet (1855-1941) Abell. A brother, George, died at fifteen years of age when Mary was about six years old. She was born in Bradford County, Pennsylvania in July, 1890. In 1900, she and her family were living at 508 2nd Street in Towanda in that county. In 1910, she was single, living at home and had no occupation at nineteen years of age. By the time of the 1920 census, Mary was twenty seven and working as a stenographer at the Court House. At the time, she and sister Clara were the only children still living at home, and their address was 21 State Street in Towanda. At thirty seven years of age, Mary was the only child still living at home in 1930, and her occupation was stenographer at the welfare office. She was still single then and likely never married. The year before her mother died, 1940, Mary was living at home, and her occupation was given as “home work-home.” In all probability, she lived at the family home in Towanda from the death of her mother in 1941 to her own death in 1979. At either eighty eight or eighty nine years of age, she was the last in her family to pass away. She is buried with all of her family members in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Towanda.
