Robert "Bob" J. Abbott, 73, of Jackson passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Friends may call Sunday, July 13, from 4-8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m., immediately followed by an American Legion service.

Funeral Mass will be Monday, July 14, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson with Father Scott M. Sunnenberg officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery with Missouri Military Honors.

Bob was born Dec. 29, 1929, at Cape Girardeau, son of Harry and Elsadena Scherer Abbott. He and Wanda Lee Austin were married Nov. 9, 1949, in Cape Girardeau. She survives.

Other loving survivors include a son Jack Lewis Abbott of O'Fallon, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie Sue and Mike Webb of Jackson; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Benny and Dorothy Abbott of Cape Girardeau, William and Mitzi Abbott of Perryville, Mo., and Glenda Abbott of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, John and Jayme Abbott of O'Fallon, Doug Spooler and wife Julie, and Jessica Spooler, all of Jackson; and a great-grandson, Cole Pickett.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry Abbott.

A veteran of the Korean War, Bob served in the U.S. Navy from 1947-1950.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post 158, all in Jackson, and a lifetime member of the Cape Girardeau VFW.

He had worked as a salesman many years for the former Thileneus Distributing Company in Cape Girardeau, retiring in 1993.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Legion Scholarship Fund or the American Cancer Society.
