Thomas B. Abbott, a resident of Clare for many years passed away at his
home on East Sixth Street, Friday morning, November 23, following a long
He was born in Lapeer County, Michigan, on May 2, 1873, the youngest
son of John and Mary Abbott. When Tom was ten years old, the father
passed away, and the family came to Clare County and settled in the
Dover comunity. In his early years he worked in the lumber woods and
sayed with his mother caring for her during her long illness.
Following his mother's death, he decided to make a home of his own,
and in 1907, was married to Mrs. Beatrice Wilson, a mother of six
children. He was destined to be left alone again in l920. In 1922 he
wed Mrs. Rebecca Cookson, who had five childen and they lived happily
together for many years until she was called home in 1947. In 1948 he
chose as his companion, Mrs. Chloetta Howard. She had one daughter.
For many years, his work was with the Pere Marquette Railroad
Company, and he spent sixteen years working at the Clare County Garage,
until his retirement a few years ago.
An Odd Fellow for forty-five years, a Rebekah for many years, and a
member of the Clare Methodist Church, his faith and trust in God helped
him durng his long months of illness.
Though he had no children of his own he endeared himself to the
hearts of his twelve step-children, nine of whom are still living.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, Chloetta, the Arthur
Cookson and A. J. Cookson families of Ohio; Ed Cookson family and Mr.
and Mrs Bud Itcue of Midland; Mrs. Idress Cookson and family of Farwell,
and the James Yeoman family of Clare, also three Wilson children,
together with many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Clare Methodist Church Sunday
afternoon, at 2:30 pm. Rev. L. J. Nevins officiating and interment in
Cherry Grove Cemetery. Committment services were conducted by the Clare
I.O.O.F. Lodge, Thurston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements
