EMBDEN - Florence Marie (Gehrke) Abbott, 85, died Monday, Sept. 26, at a Skowhegan hospital following complications from a heart problem.
She was born on April 21, 1926, in Skowhegan, the youngest child of Albert and Elizabeth (Steiner) Gehrke.
Florence was the last surviving member of her family, predeceased by her parents, brothers Albert, Harold, Lawrence, Theodore, Howard, Leonard and Arthur; and sisters Queenie and Madeline.
Florence attended Skowhegan schools and worked in Connecticut for Pratt & Whitney during World War II. She returned to Maine and married Charles Howard Abbott on June 29, 1951. They were together for 51 years until his death in 2002.
She spent much of her adult life as a homemaker, wife and mother, raising six children. She enjoyed giving away her homemade pickles. She loved her faith community, going out to lunch and her circle of friends. Florence was a life member of Cedar Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color awarded by Rainbow Girls.
She is survived by her children and their spouses and partners, Jennifer Abbott Perkins and husband Greg of Holden, Randall and wife Charlene of Fernie, British Columbia, Steven and wife Betty of Skowhegan, Timothy and Leanne of Calgary, Alberta, Martin of Elizabeth, N.J., and Mark and Wendy of Readfield; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Geoffrey, Jeremy and wife Kate, and Alyson Perkins, Ashley Abbott Blair and husband Derek, Whitney and Charles Abbott, Mark Obert and wife Melisa, Ezra Abbott and wife Victoria, Jennifer Bailey Abbott, Waylon and Suzanne and Emily Abbott; four great-grandchildren, Tatianna, Kaleb, Eriq and Benny; and many extended family members.
Committal prayers will immediately follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Solon. (Morning Sentinel 9/29/2011)
