Elizabeth was one of five children born to O. Henry Small b. Brewster and Ella Swan b. Lawrence. Otis Henry was the son of George H. Small, a fish pedlar who moved his family from Brewster first to Dover MA by 1865 and then to Lawrence MA by 1870. Ella Swan's family owned farmland which became part of the new city of Lawrence after 1848. Elizabeth and her sister Caroline survived to adulthood. Their father died of tuberculosis in Denver in 1901.
