John Abbott m. 1) Jan. 31, 1720/1 prob. at Mansfield, Conn. (but is only of record at Tolland, Conn.), to Elizabeth Berry, dau. of Nathaniel Berry and Elizabeth Philbrick. She was b. at Portsmouth, NH circa 1700 and d. at Tolland Mar. 8, 1728/9, Æ 29. The original record of John and Elizabeth's marriage, in the handwriting of Shubael Stearns, Tolland's first town clerk shows he was a poor phonetic speller:
• John abit was married to Elizabeth berye [i.e., Berry] on January the thirty first daye and in the yeare one thousand seven hundred and twenty twenty one [i.e., Jan. 31, 1720/21 in the old Julian calendar].
Unfortunately, Elizabeth's maiden name was incorrectly interpreted by someone as "Berge", which has become her errant surname in all genealogies concerning her since the error was made.
John m. 2) at Tolland, Conn. on Oct. 27, 1731, Mary Lumbert of Barnstable, Mass., the widow of John Robinson, Jr. of Barnstable, dau. of Joshua Lumbert and Hopestill Bullock of Barnstable. She was b. at Barnstable Nov. 22, 1697 and d. at Tolland, Conn. Apr. 2, 1778, Æ 81.
The existing gravestone at Tolland for John Abbott, second wife Mary, and John's son John by first wife Elizabeth and of John junior's wife Elizabeth, reflects multiple errors. The gravestone was undoubtedly erected long after the four individuals died, probably in the 1800s when the meaning of the term "aged" was long forgotten:
• 1) the family name was Abbott vs. Abbot, albeit it took awhile for the second "t" to be consistently used by later generations;
• 2) John Abbott, Sr. was 82 years old when he died, and "aged" (Æ) 83, not 85; and
• 3) the stated "aged" of John, Jr. and wife Elizabeth are understated by one year, the age inscribed being their chronological age, not their Ætatis suæ (Æ) age.
The children of John Abbott, Sr. and first wife Elizabeth Berry, b. of record at Tolland, Conn., are:
• i. Elizabeth Abbott, b. Dec. 31, 1721, bapt. at the East Barnstable, Mass. Chh. May 14, 1732, and d. at Tolland, Conn. Dec. 17, 1782, Æ 61. She m. 1) Joseph Peck at an unknown date and place, who d. at Tolland, Conn. Apr. 19, 1741; she m. 2) July 3, 1744 at Tolland, Sylvanus (q.v.) Delano.
• ii. Sarah Abbott, b. Apr. 22, 1723; d. unmarried at Tolland Feb. 11, 1742/3, Æ 20.
• iii. John Abbott, Jr., b. Sept. 18, 1725, d. at Tolland May 17, 1776, Æ 51; m. at Tolland Jan. 21, 1747/8, Elizabeth Stearns.
The children of John Abbott, Sr. and second wife Mary Lumbert, b. of record at Tolland, Conn., are:
• iv. Joseph Adna Abbott, b. Sept. 26, 1733, d. Mar. 2, 1777 of sickness in the Continental Army at Fort George, NY, Æ 44; m. on Nov. 10, 1756 at Springfield, Mass., Lucy Parsons.
• v. Mary Abbott, b. May 8, 1737, d. at Springfield, Mass. Nov 30, 1795, Æ 59; m. by intention dated Sept. 7, 1754 at Springfield, Mass., Abner Parsons, uncle of her brother Joseph Adna Abbott's wife Lucy.
