Delpha Dee Abbott was born Aug. 1, 1929 in Hickman, Ky., to Lottie Smith Pate and Harry Alvin Pate. She departed this life Sept. 10, 2013, in Cape Girardeau at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 9 days.
Delpha grew up in Cottonwood Point, Mo., she attended elementary school before going on to graduate from Caruthersville High School in 1947. Upon graduation, she attended business school at Draughon's Business College in Memphis, Tenn., until receiving a call from the president of First State Bank in Caruthersville who offered her a job. She packed her bags, moved to Cottonwood and entered the workforce, where she would have a successful career that carried into the final days of her life. On June 25, 1949, she was united in marriage to Joseph D. Abbott in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1999, only a few months after celebrating 50 years of marriage.
Their marriage was a story of true love from start to finish. God blessed them with three children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Delpha balanced a career with joyful duties of being a wife and mother, and she did it well. She was employed for many years at First State Bank, the Pemiscot County Collector's Office and as a bookkeeper for the Caruthersville School District until her retirement in 1994. She was never one who liked idle time, and, after her retirement, she continued to work past-time, including serving the city of Caruthersville as city collector and more recently, as city treasurer, a position she held at the time of her death.
She was a faithful Christian and active member of the Cottonwood Point and Eastwood Memorial United Methodist churches for her entire life, where she played the piano, taught Sunday School, and held several offices in the United Methodist Women.
One could search and never find a more devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother or grandmother. ............
"D.D." was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She leaves the following to cherish her memory: her brother, Kenneth Pate and wife Shirley of Fredericktown, Mo.; her two sons, Mike Abbott and wife Patty and Brian Abbott and wife Anna, all of Caruthersville; her daughter, Becky Smith and husband Bill of Vandalia, Ohio; her eight grandchildren ..........,; and her three great-grandchildren .............
Pallbearers for Mrs. Abbott were Ricky Neal Clark, Todd Abbott, Christian Abbott, Parr Abbott, Brian Abbott, Bill Smith and Clint Moody
