Birth: Aug. 20, 1840
Plainwell
Allegan County
Michigan, USA
Death: Feb. 3, 1921
Fremont
Steuben County
Indiana, USA

Chancy Abbott was born August 20, 1840, at Plainwell, Allegan county, Michigan, and died at his home in Fremont, Ind., Feb. 3, 1921, aged 80 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was the son of Rufus Chancy Abbott and Malvina Tillotson Abbott. He was the sixth of a family of ten children, of whom only three sisters survive him, Harriet, of California, Mary, of Memphis, Tenn., and Orinza of Toledo, Ohio.

In his younger days, his father being a captain of an Erie canal boat, it was a great pleasure for him to accompany his father on his trips from Buffalo to Albany.

At the age of 8 or ten years he with his parents moved to Steuben county and DeKalb and Steuben counties have since been his home.

At the age of 20 years he enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st regiment Michigan infantry on April 24 at Burr Oak, Mich., and was duly mustered into the service of the U.S., May 1st, 1861. He served his country until he was mustered out at Detroit, Mich., August 7, 1861.

On February 8, 1866, he was united in marriage with Sarah J. Dirlam, of Waterloo. To this union six children were born, five sons and one daughter, as follows: R. F. Abbott,
of Reading, Mich., Inez Abbott, C. L. Abbott, Fremont, Ind., B. F. Abbott, Reading, Mich., B. R. Abbott and Arthur Abbott, Fremont, Ind. He leaves to mourn their loss the six children, 4 grandchildren, one adopted grandchild, the three sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was a member of B. J. Crosswaite Post No. 150, G.A.R. at Angola. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for over fifty years, also a member of the Rebekah lodge at Fremont. One of the great pleasures of his later life was the attending of his lodge, which he really loved.

He was a quiet, unassuming man, highly respected and loved by his many relatives and friends. His familiar face and kindly greeting will only remain as a pleasant memory to his friends and family. As a man, he was honest and courageous, efficient and reliable. He was a great reader and a close observer and was well posted on all subjects.

The removal of Father Abbott from our midst is like the passing of an old landmark. He had a great large heart for his family, ever ready to respond to whatever their needs might be. He was a good father, an honored citizen and one of the men that grew mellow with age. All the burdens of accumulating years and ill health, while they told upon his bodily strength, rested lightly upon him and never seemed to worry or overtax his fervor nor dim or obscure his vision of the bright and sunny side of life. No place will he be missed so much as in the home, where his evening chair is vacant.

On April 28, 1914, the wife and mother passed away and since then he, with two sons and the daughter, have lived together in the home.
