Civil War: Company H, 5th Iowa Cavalry

Adolphus Thurstin Abbey was born in Ontario County, New York, September 27, 1830 (also: August 26, 1830), the son of blacksmith Lyman Abbey and Mary Griffin Cleveland. His family had moved to Iowa by 1856 (1856 Iowa Census). He was living on the farm of his older brother, Griffin Cleveland Abbey (Co. K, 21st Iowa Inf.), at Hazel Green, Delaware County, in June 1860 (1860 US Census). He married Louisa A. Sawtelle at Richland in Keokuk County on February 19, 1860. He was a 31-year-old resident of Bellevue in eastern Jackson County when he enlisted as a 2nd sergeant October 19, 1861. Sergeant Abbey was mustered into Company H, 5th Iowa Cavalry January 1, 1862. He re-enlisted for 3 years on January 2, 1864. He was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Brown's Mill (Newnan, Georgia) July 31, 1864. After repatriation Sergeant Abbey was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, June 23, 1865. Also serving the Union were his younger brothers Thomas (Co. I, 5th Iowa Inf.) and Aaron (Co. H, 5th Iowa Cav.). He returned to his family in Iowa to reside in Linn County where he was a blacksmith (1870, 1880 US Census, 1885 Iowa Census). He filed for a Civil War veterans disability pension in Linn County June 19, 1880, and received certificate No. 380,667. Sometime after 1885 Adolphus, Louisa and their children relocated to Orange County, California (1892 Orange County Great Register). After his death Louisa filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Orange County November 4, 1895, and received certificate No. 632,026. Louisa died in Orange County January 5, 1899 (gravesite not found).
