BENJAMIN ABBEY, son of Elizur and Betsey (Gildersleeve) Abbey, born September 27, 1809, at Chatham, Conn.; died there April 11, 1865.
He was by trade a ship-carpenter and, in association with his father, built ships at the yard near Siam Dock at Chatham, in Middle Haddam, Conn., and in Georgia for a few years. In 1860 he was recorded by the Census at Portland as a farmer, his mother living with him and his two sons, Elizur and Charles,
at home.
Married in Portland, December 26, 1833, VIENNA MATILDA PELTON, She died in Portland, August 23, 1900. She was a member of the Congregational Church.
