Ardis "Stub" N. Aasby, 84, of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at the Highmore Health, Highmore, SD. Ardis was born August 31, 1927, to Louis and Sara (Stangleland) Aasby.
Ardis attended Loomis School previously named Aasby School. Ardis then attended Augustana Academy, Canton, SD, which was a Lutheran High School. Ardis went to the Army right at the tail end of World War II and served during the Korean War.
On June 8, 1958, Ardis married Shirley Rose Wahlen at Seneca. To this union three children were born, David Clayton, January 29, 1960; Michael Anthony, July 1, 1963; Melody Ardin, July 11, 1965.
Ardis and Shirley farmed and ranched in Holabird, working their own land as well as farming and ranching with Louis and Sara. They moved to Harrold, farming and ranching with Shirley teaching all along, and remained there from 1964-1968. They then returned to Holabird to live and work their place one mile west of the Aasby Homestead for about ten years. They then built a house on the Louis and Sara Aasby Homestead in 1980. They moved to the new home on an icy cold Sunday morning in January 1981. Ardis had already made the move as he said when the propane ran out- that was it--he wasn't putting anymore in. Shirley and the kids woke to a cold house and Ardis and the neighbors showed up and backed pickups up to the two doors and spent the day moving beds, appliances and furniture to the new house.
Ardis and Shirley and the kids were active in Western Wranglers 4-H club, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Loomis School, Holabird School, Rodeo's and Highmore High School activities all through the years. Ardis and Shirley enjoyed going to REA dances in Miller. Ardis enjoyed Thursday sales at Highmore Livestock Barn.
Ardis and Shirley worked hard to provide for the family by farming/ranching and Shirley teaching. Ardis also helped build the Oahe Dam at Big Bend Dam in the early 1960's and worked for the Corp. of Engineer's at Oahe Dam in Pierre from 1968-1978. After working all day he would return home and work another four to six hours on the farm.
In June 1999, Ardis and Shirley celebrated 41 years of marriage. Shirley passed away in January 2000 with Ardis by her side. That was Ardis, he was always so good and helpful to Shirley through years of her illness. Ardis and Shirley had left the family farm, where David had moved with his family and Ardis and Shirley lived at the Manor in Highmore. After Shirley passed away, Ardis returned to the family farm until 2006, when he returned to the Manor.
Ardis was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in September 2010. In April 2011, it was decided it would be best for Ardis to move to the Nursing Home at Fort Meade so he could receive around the clock care. In September 2011, a bed was available at the Highmore Nursing Home and Ardis was anxious to return home. Ardis was always a quiet man, tireless, hardworking, and took great pride in teaching his children the skills of running a farm/ranch operation. Ardis and Shirley were blessed with ten grandchildren as well as several foster grandchildren. Ardis enjoyed and appreciated his grandchildren even though they tended to get loud and overactive for him.
Ardis had a good sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke. He would often write them down so he would get them right and share them later. He had a bright smile and his blue/gray eyes gleamed. Ardis suffered from a major stroke around February 22, 2012, which took his ability to speak.
He is survived by his sister, Lavon Mize, Rapid City, SD; his three children and their spouses, David (Beth) Aasby of Holabird, Michael (Karla) Aasby of Highmore, and Melody (Jeff) Jablonki of Brighton, CO; ten grandchildren, John Wayne Jablonski of Brighton, CO, Kevin Jablonski of Missoula, MT, and Kasey, Josey, Riley, Laney, Grady, and Coby Aasby, all of Highmore, and Digit and Ayden Aasby of Holabird; numerous nephews and nieces; and two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Proceeding him in death were his parents; wife, Shirley; brother, Leroy and sister-in-law, Berta; brother-in-law, Joe Mize; nephews, Duane and baby boy, Mize, and Scott Lehman; parents-in-law, Nels John and Ruth Wahlen.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 5, 2012, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday, March 4, 2012, with a prayer service, all at Luze Funeral Home, Highmore. Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Ardis' arrangements.
