Isaac was a blacksmith by trade, but in January 1849, at the age of 62, he set sail, via the clipper ship "Robert Bowne, from New York to San Francisco, California to participate in the Gold Rush. He stayed in California until 1851 and his exploits were recounted in the letters that he wrote from Rio de Janiero (when he "rounded the Horn"), San Francisco, and from Auburn's "dry diggin's". After his return from the gold fields he resided with his daughter, Nancy and her husband, Leander Russell, who kept a store and loaded canal boats at Port Gibson, New York on the Erie Canal.
The letters were transcribed into a book by the New York Genelogical Quarterly in 1957 and can be found on line at UC (Berkley) Bancroft Library Archives and can be viewed (PDF format) at http://bancroft.library.ca.gov/diglib/images/texts/web_images/grandfather01.pdf
