George was the son and eldest child of Christian Anderson and Louise Smith. His father, an immigrant from Norway, died when George was just 15. George went on to become a musician, a clarinetist, and played with several different jazz bands and orchestras. He married Bessie M. and their only child, Lucille Louise, was born in Michigan, but shortly after the family settled and remained in Chicago. George's wife Bessie pre-deceased him. He died in Edgewater Hospital as a result of congestive heart failure.
