Dodge City, Ford Co., KS—Wednesday, 26 January 2005

MEADE—Clara M. Alford, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in rural Meade County.

She was born Feb. 24, 1932, to Albert Leonard and Mary Marcy (Kizer) Alford at Mishawaka, Ind. A resident of Meade since 1992, moving from Fort Collins, Colo., she was a small business owner and newspaper carrier for the Hutchinson News, Wichita Eagle and the Dodge City Daily Globe. She attended the United Methodist Church, Meade, and enjoyed working with crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two brothers, Leonard Alford, Osceola, Ind., and Ray Alford, Tucson, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Luella Steffan; and companion, Roy Wasson.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Chapel, Meade…. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Meade….

MEADE—One woman was killed in an early-morning one-vehicle accident Sunday west of Meade. Clara M. Alford, 72, of Meade died after the 1999 Pontiac van she was driving westbound on U.S. 54 hit two horses 3 miles west of Meade shortly after 3 a.m., according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

After striking the horses, the van ended up in the ditch, said a dispatcher at the Meade County Sheriff's Department. Alford was not wearing a seatbelt....
