Our sincere appreciation to Kimberly Guthmann for being so giving of her time to go to the Elk City Cemetery to take photos of the Abraham headstones. THANK YOU, our family is truly grateful.

--------------------------------------------

John E. ABRAHAM was the son of John M. and Catharine (née BARTLETT) ABRAHAM. He was the fifth child of seven children born to John and Catharine. His siblings were: Lot, Margaret, James, Charles, Arthur, and Roy.

He was barely seven years old when he drowned in the Rawhide Creek in the Elkhorn River Valley of Nebraska. The ABRAHAM Family had moved from Henry County, Iowa to Douglas County, Nebraska during March 1881 and Johnny died the following year on May 31, 1882.

His Aunt Susie (Susannah ABRAHAM, sister of John E.'s father) told of how after a heavy spring rain, Johnny decided to cool off on a hot Wednesday afternoon by going for a swim. He loved to swim and had become quite familiar with the Rawhide Creek.

Being only seven, John didn't have the experience to realize that heavy rains often change a familiar, inviting creek bed into one that can be treacherous with logs and rocks that have been swept along by the force of the rising creek waters after a heavy rain.

A large pool of water had formed in the Rawhide Creek from the storm and Johnny, anxious to jump in, didn't hesitate before running and diving head first into waters he believed he knew were safe. He drowned after hitting his head on something concealed in the sun glistened water (it is believed that his head probably hit a log or rock located just below the surface of the water).

Per a death notice published Friday, June 2, 1882, in a local newspaper, Reverend WINTERS conducted services for Johnny at the Elkhorn City schoolhouse on June 1. (Note: Elkhorn City changed its name to Elk City about 1885.)

Young John's sudden death was a difficult and tragic lost for the ABRAHAM family.
