FAIRFIELD - William Joseph, 93, died peaceful on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, after a long struggle with cancer. His loving wife, Frances Thomas, preceded him in death. He was born in Lawrence, Mass., to Abraham Slayman Joseph and Rachel Ramsey. When William was a year old, the family moved back to Waterville; then, when he was 8, they moved to Fairfield and his father established a clothing store on what eventually became the site of Joseph's Outlet.
Bill lived in Fairfield the rest of his life and was proud to have played basketball for and have graduated from Lawrence High School in 1939.
He and Frances were married in 1946. In 1956, they established Joseph's Outlet and worked side by side until their retirement in 1986. Bill went from selling beer to building a sporting goods store where he sold boats, snowmobiles, guns and fishing tackle. Many will remember buying their first piece of sporting equipment from him.
Bill was a charter member of the Fairfield Kiwanis Club of which he was a member for 65 years. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Fairfield Little League Program. Bill was also a member of the Fairfield American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In 1943, Bill joined the Army Air Corp and served as a gunner and radar operator on a B-29 bomber over the Pacific theater. He flew 26 missions, earning five air medals. In addition, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism beyond the call of duty. Bill received an honorable discharge in 1943 and returned to Fairfield.
At age 92, he was the second oldest man in the state to bag a moose.
He and Frances were married 40 years and are survived by four daughters and their families: Rachel, married to John Hachey, of Florida, who have two sons, Joseph and Samuel, Lynn, married to Neil Orme, of California; Shelley, married to David Couturier, of Fairfield, who have two sons and a daughter, William "Billy" Maheu, Scott Couturier and Darcy Hotchkiss, and Cindy Julia has a daughter, Cassie Ferris, married to C. Thomas Ferris. Other survivors include 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Joseph, and his family; and several nieces and nephews. Bill will be missed by all who knew him.
Spring burial will be at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. (Morning Sentinel 2/11/2013)
