Carrie May Matthies Maass, 74, of Burton, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in North Cypress Medical Center in Cypress. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Burton with Rev. Glen Schoeneberg and Rev. Judy Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Carrie May was born in Burton, Texas, to the late Almuth E. "Pop" and Lesta A. (Sommerfield) Matthies. She was baptized in St. John's United Church of Christ in Burton. Carrie was a graduate of Burton High School. On June 2, 1956, she was married to Mervin Maass at St. John's United Church of Christ in Burton, where she was faithfully active as a member of the women's Circle I and taught Sunday school when her daughters were young. Carrie was an avid sports fan, especially interested in tennis. She served on the Washington County Fair VIP committee and was a Girl Scout leader for a number of years. She liked to cook and did a lot of canning.
Carrie was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Oldham; a granddaughter, Madeliene Lynette Tiemann; and brother-in-law, Eugene Thaler.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Mervin Maass, of Burton; daughter, Cheryl Tiemann and husband, Jimmy, of Brenham; son-in-law, Jay Oldham, of Magnolia; grandchildren, Valerie Harrison and husband, Titus, and Jared Tiemann and fiancée, Codylyn Stepanek; great-grandchildren, Keagan Harrison and Hunter Duffy; sisters, Marjorie Ann Thaler, of Houston, and Evelyn Fay Maass and husband, Dennis, of Giddings; as well as many other relatives and numerous friends.
