BEMIDJI — Martin Rolf Sathre, 87, of Bemidji, Minn., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Goldpine Home in Bemidji.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Gay Albers officiating with military honors by the American Legion Post No. 14 of Bemidji. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Martin was born July 30, 1925, in Bemidji, Minn., the son of Elias and Grace (Fitzwater) Sathre. He was raised and educated in Bemidji, graduating from Bemidji High School in 1943. He served his country in the U.S. Army from October 1943 until he was discharged in December of 1946 as Technical Sergeant, stationed in the European Theater throughout central Europe. He returned to Bemidji and attended Northern Business College. In 1947, he began a lifelong career as an abstractor at Sathre Title and Abstract working there until May of 2012. His father had started the company in 1914 and as Martin joined him, he helped the business grow into a five countywide abstract, title insurance and real estate closing company, providing regional help and advice to thousands of people buying and selling real estate over the years. He was a member of the American and Minnesota Land Title Associations, serving a term as the Minnesota state president.

He married Dorothy Muckala on July 9, 1949, in Bagley. In addition to raising his family, Martin was an extremely devoted community member. He was dedicated to helping Bemidji grow to become the regional hub that it is today. He held several government positions: Bemidji city treasurer from 1951-52, Bemidji City Council – one term starting in 1952, Deputy Register of Deeds from 1952- 1960, in 1965 he was the state president of the Minnesota Association of Register of Deeds, Beltrami County Recorder from 1961-1982, and the Emergency Services Director of Beltrami County in 1984. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bemidji. His civic commitments were legendary. He was a devoted member of the Bemidji Rotary noon club for over 60 years, serving as president in 1958 and also editor of the club newsletter, often having perfect attendance. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 14 and the VFW post No. 1260 both of Bemidji, was on the Bemidji Development Board and the First Federal Bank Board for many years. He was a past member of Bemidji Jaycees, was editor of their newsletter and was elected the Young Man of the Year in 1953. He was Scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Troop No. 23. He did this all with a smile and genuine warmth.

Martin took great interest in local history and had a vast knowledge of past events, especially his Big Bass Lake memories. He also enjoyed stamp collecting and gardening.

Martin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sathre, of Bemidji; two sons, Jerry (Darla) Sathre, of Baxter, Minn., Michael (Coralie) Sathre, of Plano, Texas; a daughter, Kaye (Phil) Horton, of Goldwaite, Texas; three grandchildren, Daniel (Mandy) Sathre, Charles Horton and Sarah Horton; two great-grandsons, Alexander Flynn and Nicholas Sathre.
