Born in Borutin, Rotibur, Germany on March 22, 1923, Ruth came to the U.S. in 1948 as the bride of CWO Crary, and received numerous sharpshooting medals (including the Tyro Award) as a member of the Fort Richardson Women s Club Rifle Team, while stationed in Alaska. Ruth designed, and with their own hands, she, with her husband and children, built their home on James Island, S.C. An artist and sculptor, her Scottish paintings now hang in the bandroom of The Citadel. After Mr. Crary s passing, she built her final home in Fort Mill, S.C., this time with only her own hands. She also won honors in sculpting and painting in the Piedmont area of S.C. As proprietor of The Lighthouse in Fort Mill, her works as a designer and craftsman of lighting fixtures and grandfather clocks were placed in homes all along the East Coast, including the chandeliers which now hang in the York County, S.C. Courthouse. Upon retirement from her own business, she joined her daughter in film production and received numerous screen credits for productions with Hill/Mandelker Films, Hill/Fields Productions and Leonard Hill Films.
She will be laid to rest on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC in the Community Mausoleum that she and her husband built together, also with their own hands, in 1960.
Visitation is at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. She is survived by her brother, Joachim Bornstedt of Kassel, Germany; her nieces, Gabriella West of Burlington, N.C. and Angelika Bornstedt of Cuxhaven, Germany; her cousin, Klaus Haase of St. Martin, Germany; her daughter, Ardythe Crary Goergens-Moriana of Los Angeles (Miss Fort Mill, 1967); and her granddaughter, Heidi Lynn Bowman, a senior at Winthrop University, S.C. Her son, Bruce Michael Crary, deceased in 1997, was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Your inspiration will live with us always. We shall miss you very, very, very much, our Ruth, our Mother, our Mutti, our Mum.
