— DANVILLE — Charles D. Bankes, 85, of 191 Jade Ave., died on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, in the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Bloomsburg, the son of the late Luther and Edna (Schell) Bankes. His first wife, the former Evelyn Fisher, predeceased him on Dec. 6, 1980. In 1981, he married the former Betty Troup. She predeceased him in 2001 after 20 years of marriage.
Charles was an Army veteran, having served honorably during World War II.
He retired from Merck in Riverside, where he worked as a pipe fitter.
Charles was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Danville, and a member of Frank W. Sidler American Legion Post 40, Danville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 298, Danville, Danville Lodge 1133 of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Montour County Sportsmen's Club.
He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Lois Bankes, of Muncy; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Corey and Ruthann Troup, of Selinsgrove; three stepgrandsons, Ryan, Brandon, and Nathan Troup; and one stepgranddaughter, Erin Troup.
In addition to his parents and two wives, Charles was preceded in death by one sister, Imogene Schick, and one stepson, Joel Troup.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 11 with his pastor, the Rev. Mary Schmotzer, officiating.
Burial will follow in Watsontown Cemetery.
