Built the first water-powered grist mill in 1802
A large grindstone wheel sits beside this grave. The copper plate covers the center hole through which a drive shaft would have been fitted. Water would have turned a mill wheel to power the shaft, causing the grindstone to turn. Joseph's mill ran by power from one of the streams that feeds the North Fork of the Licking River. This grindstone wheel is in the center of the photo on the main page for this cemetery, and his tombstone is to its immediate left.
A much smaller grindstone, cut from a single piece of flint, rested by the grave as recently as 1995.
