Duchess d'Orléans. Born Helene Luise Elisabeth Herzogin von Mecklenburg-Schwerin at Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, the daughter of Friedrich Ludwig Erbgroßherzog von Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Karoline Luise Prinzessin von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. She married Ferdinand Philippe d'Orléans, Prince héréditaire de France, Duc d'Orléans in May 1837 at Fontainebleau, Île-de-France, France. A happy marriage, it produced two sons. Within five years, however, her husband was killed in a carriage accident in Sablonville and was interred in a tomb in the Chapelle Royale, in Dreux, Eure-et-Loir. In February 1848, after the abdication of Louis Philippe, the duchess applied to the Chamber of Deputies in the hope of having her eldest son proclaimed heir and of obtaining the regency; but the hostility of the populace forced her to flee. She took refuge in England, where she died ten years later at the age of 44. She was returned to France for burial, but was barred from burial in the Catholic chapel beside her husband. Instead she was interred in a room with a separate entrance attached to the chapel. An opening was made between her tomb and her husband's and the duchess' effigy reaches through it toward that of the duke.
