Memorial B Company 192nd Tank Battalion
Birth: Nov. 25, 1940
Maywood
Cook County
Illinois, USA
Death: Apr. 9, 1942, Philippines

This memorial remembers the Illinois National Guardsmen who were called to federal service, on November 25, 1940, as members of Hq Company & B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion.
After living through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield on December 8, 1941, December 7th in the United States, the 192nd Tank Battalion fought to slow Japan's conquest of the Philippine Islands. On December 22, 1941, at Lingayen Gulf, a platoon of B Company tanks fought the first tank battle, of World War II, involving American tanks. Pfc Henry Deckert, of B Company, became the first American killed in tank to tank action in WWII on that date.
For four months, their battalion fought without food, without adequate supplies, and without the possibility of being relieved. The battalion, with the 194th Tank Battalion, fought so well that the Japanese were convinced they had 1000 tanks instead of the real number of slightly over 100. They often were the last American troops to withdraw from an area to form a new defensive line.
On April 9, 1942, after destroying their tanks, most of the members of both companies became Prisoners of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. They took part in what has become known as the Bataan Death March. Some died on the march, but many of the soldiers would later die in Japanese POW camps or on unmarked POW ships that were sunk by American submarines. In all, 56 men would never return home.
Each September, since 1942, on the second Sunday of the month, the Maywood Bataan Day Organization has held a memorial service to honor the members of the 192nd Tank Battalion and all those who fought on Bataan.
