Mojo was a CKC registered Rat Terrier. I got him when he was about 7 weeks old. I saw an ad in the newspaper and called about the puppies listed. When my daughter and I went to pick one out, all of the others were jumping and running around like crazy, but he was sitting in the corner looking sad. He had these brown eyebrows that really added to the effect too. We fell in love with him instantly. On the ride home, my daughter asked what I was going to name him.I said "Mojo" and he raised his head like he knew I was talking about him. He knew his name from that instant and came when we called him.
My husband had said that I couldn't have a dog inside the house and my intentions were to just keep him inside until I had a suitable kennel fixed for him. My husband worked a double shift that day and didn't find out about him until the next morning. He was not impressed to say the least, especially when he asked if I planned on keeping him in the house, and I replied yes. But Mojo was a very smart puppy and house broke very easily and didn't whine and bark alot.
He ended up staying in the house permanently.
When Hurricane Katrina had us without electricity for over three weeks, he would lay on the floor vent for the air conditioning and look at us like we hadn't paid the bill. Those eyebrows again.
We took him on vacation with us, all the way to Tennessee and Virginia, riding in the front seat between my husband and I.
When I got pregnant with my oldest son in 2005, Mojo would lay with his head on my stomach. When we brought Monte home from the hospital in March of 2006, it was like Mojo already knew who he was. He never growled at him or acted jealous one bit. When Benjamin came along in 2007, he was the same way. He was very protective of the both of them but I think Monte was his favorite. We used to say the boys were Mojo's puppies.
Mojo was a very good watch dog and always let us know when someone drove up infront of our house. We live in the country and he would chase squirrels and deer in our yard. Once when my husband and boys were out in the yard, Mojo killed a chicken snake by our shed.
Mojo loved to lay on the sofa at night with me and watch TV. He was my baby. He always wanted to be touching me. He got presents on Christmas and his birthdays. He was the best dog in the whole world.
I have a million pictures of him. Some that he wasn't even supposed to be in, but he loved to have his picture taken. He was a real ham.
On October 16, 2010,we were having my son Ben's 3rd birthday party and most everyone was out in the yard. We have a pond and Mojo loved to go to the other side and chase squirrels. No one heard him yelp or anything but he came running back a few minutes later with blood on his side. He was bitten by a snake, most likely a rattlesnake.
He died not long after he was bitten. We have buried him in our front yard between some rose bushes. His grave has a raised slab that my husband made (he loved the dog almost as much as I did). He has a headstone but we have not put it down yet.
When I named him Mojo, someone said "why would you name him that? That is like magic or a spell or something." But it suited him,for he worked magic on everyone that came in contact with him. My husband who never wanted a dog in the house, learned to love him, and now we have two puppies in the house.
My boys miss him terribly, especially Monte. They had him for their entire lives and referred to him as their brother. I did not know that they would take it that hard. I have five daughters as well, who will miss him too. Two of them still living at home, who miss him the most but the older three had all gotten attached too since they were living at home when we first got him.
I have since gotten two puppies, one of which looks almost identical to Mojo. I did not want to get another dog so soon but my husband and I decided it was best for the boys.
I have had alot of dogs over the years and I have lost alot but none quite affected me the way this one did. He was my baby, my best friend in the whole world and I will never forget him.
Mojo, there will never be another dog like you. If I could truly have anything in the world this Christmas, it would be to bring you back.
Rest in peace, my freckledy pup.
