Just before Stuart-Forbes departed on the campaign that would lead to his death at the Little Bighorn, he recieved a letter from his mother. The letter informed him that his reason for fleeing England would soon be resolved. Therefore, he would be able to return home after his enlistment expired in January of 1877. Soldiers killed at the battle were first buried where they had died. In 1881 remains of these soldiers were re-buried in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
