Hall of Fame Sports Broadcaster. After serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, he began covered sports as an announcer for Chicago, Illinois's WGN-TV and WGN Radio stations, beginning with Channel Nine's first telecast in 1948. He broadcasted games for Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs of the National League and the Chicago White Sox of the American League, being able to do so because it was very rare the two teams played on the same date while at home. He also did the play-by-play of the Chicago Bears of ther National Football League on WGN Radio for 24 consecutive years. He announced his 5,000th game for WGN-TV and Radio on August 5, 1979. Two years later, in 1981, he retired from play-by-play duties after more than 40 years of covering the Cubs and White Sox. In August, 1983, he was inducted into the media wing of the Baseball Hall Of Fame, receiving the Ford C. Frick Award.

You were the best, Jack. I have had a lifelong love of baseball thanks partly to you and those afternoon, afterschool Cubs ball games. Hey! Hey!|
