Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Graduated from the USMA in 1826 (his classmates included future CSA Generals Albert S. Johnston and John B. Grayson, as well as future Union Generals Samuel P. Heintzelman and Silas Casey). A veteran of the Mexican War, Babbitt's Civil War service consisted of duty as Colonel & Chief Quartermaster, Department of the Pacific. His brevet promotion to Brigadier General, United States Regular Army, was awarded on March 13, 1865, for "faithful and meritorious services in the Quartermaster's Department during the War". He was also the army officer responsible for the repair of the Alamo in 1850, which included the adding of the now familiar "hump" or parapet over the facade (forever changing the local architecture). He retire with the rank of Colonel in 1866. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
