John Flammang Schrank
Birth: Mar. 5, 1876
Erdinger Landkreis
Bavaria (Bayern), Germany
Death: Sep. 15, 1943
Dodge County
Wisconsin, USA

Failed Assassin. John Schrank was a part-time bartender from New York City. He believed strongly that no American President should serve three terms in office. In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was running for a third term as President even though he was currently out of office. So John Schrank travelled to various locations in the eastern U.S. in the Fall of 1912 hoping to get his chance to stop Roosevelt. On October 14, 1912, Schrank shot Theodore Roosevelt in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Roosevelt was hit in the chest by one bullet but survived. The bullet was never removed. Schrank claimed that the ghost of President McKinley had instructed him to stop Teddy Roosevelt from becoming President again. Schrank was confined at the Central State Hospital in Waupun, Wisconsin, for most of the rest of his life. After he died, his body was sent to the Medical School at Marquette University. (bio by: Seth Musselman)
