Media Entrepreneur. Lord Sidney Bernstein of Leigh, a British businessman, was the founder of Granada Television in 1954. He cultivated the television business in Northern England. He was awarded a life peerage by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1969 Birthday Honours List for his services to television, and in 1984 he was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in recognition of his outstanding contribution to British television culture. Born Sidney Lewis Bernstein into a large Orthodox Jewish household, he left school at 15 but gained wealth in property at the 1922 death of his father, who had music halls. He had traveled to the United States and witness the growth in cinemas. With that opportunity, he and his brother opened 60 cinemas and theaters. Sidney Bernstein was a founder of the Film Society in 1924. In 1930 he built the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End and started his Granada Cinemas in Dover. During World War II, Adolph Hitler's Nazi Party caused German Jewish actors and behind the camera personnel to become unemployed. He made an effort to bring these talented people to England to work with him. During this time, he made films supporting the war for the British government. He was also an uncredited film producer, most notably Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 film "Rope." He and Hitchcock were long-time friends. The two men started Transatlantic Pictures after World War II and made two documentaries on Nazi Concentration Camps. The film "Memories of Camps" was made to be a permanent reminder of Nazi atrocities for German and world audiences, yet it debuted in 1985 on British television. Having a multi-facet career, he acquired a substantial interest in the publishing companies of Rupert Hart-Davis, McGibbon and Kee, and several others by 1961. He remained in control of his businesses beyond his seventh decade of life. He married twice and had two children with his second wife along with adopting her daughter.
