Georges Gauthier
Birth: Oct. 9, 1871
Quebec, Canada
Death: Aug. 31, 1940
Quebec, Canada

Third Archbishop of Montreal, first rector of the University of Montreal. Georges Gauthier, son of François Xavier Gauthier and Marie Généreux, was ordained as a priest on September 29, 1894. In 1912, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal. Gauthier was the fifth bishop of Montreal, and the first rector of the University of Montreal, serving from 1920 to 1923. Archbishop of Montreal Paul Bruchési developed an illness in 1921 which made it difficult for him to carry out his duties. Those were largely performed by Gauthier, who was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Montreal that year. In 1923, he became Coadjutor Archbishop of Montreal. Archbishop Bruchési passed away on September 20, 1939 and Gauthier succeeded him that day as Archbishop of Montreal. However, his tenure was short, as he died less than one year later. Georges Gauthier was interred on September 5, 1940 at Saint Jacques Cathédrale de Montréal. (bio by: Anne Philbrick)
