US Presidential Press Secretary. A veteran journalist, he served as President Gerald Ford's first Press Secretary for one month (August to September 1974). He famously resigned rather than defend Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon, which he called "a double standard of justice". terHorst served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Grand Rapids Press. He returned to active duty with the USMC during the Korean War. In 1953 he joined the Detroit News and became its Washington Bureau Chief in 1961. terHorst was Ford's first appointment after Richard Nixon resigned the presidency; he had covered Ford's political career as a journalist since 1948 and the two were well-acquainted. His stepping down one month into the new administration added more fuel to the post-Watergate controversy. He stated in his resignation letter that "As your spokesman, I do not know how I could credibly defend that action in the absence of a like decision to grant absolute pardon to the young men who evaded Vietnam military service as a matter of conscience and the absence of pardons for former aides and associates of Mr. Nixon who have been charged with crimes -- and imprisoned -- stemming from the same Watergate situation. These are also men whose reputations and families have been grievously injured. Try as I can, it is impossible to conclude that the former President is more deserving of mercy than persons of lesser station in life whose offenses have had far less effect on our national wellbeing." terHorst returned to the Detroit News and then became director of public affairs for the Ford Motor Company. (bio by: Jane Hatch)
