Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first in Company A, 23rd New York Volunteer Infantry, rising from Corporal to 1st Sergeant. He was then transferred to the 161st New York Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant. He rose to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the regiment, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "conspicuous gallantry and eminently distinguished services at Sabine Cross Roads, La., April 8, 1864."
