US Navy Rear Admiral. He was appointed a Midshipman on April 1, 1828 and served his first duty at the New York Navy Yard. He next was assigned to duty in the West Indies where he was promoted to Passed Midshipman followed by duty in the Mediterranean on the U.S.S. Constitution and the U.S.S. United States. By 1845 he was a lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. Saint Mary and commanded the gun batteries at the bombardment of Vera Cruz during the Mexican War. He was promoted to Commander in 1855 and captained the brig U.S.S. Dolphin in the Paraguay expedition in 1859 through 1860. He assumed command of the Brazil station after the expedition and remained there until 1861. During the Civil War he commanded the steamboat U.S.S. Maryland with instructions to keep the lines of communication open between Baltimore and Philadelphia. In late 1861 he joined Commodore Foote on the Mississippi, however after a short time left to join the Port Royal expeditions. Here he led the assault which led to the capture of Port Royal. In September of 1862 Steedman was promoted to Captain and transferred to the U.S.S. Powhatan, in which vessel he first blockaded Charleston. Throughout the final years of the war he was attached to the commands of Admirals Dahlgren and Goldsborough. He next commanded the Boston Navy Yard from 1869 to 1872 and while in that command he was promoted to Rear Admiral. His last duty was as commanding officer of the South Pacific squadron from October 1872 to September 1873. At the end of that command he was placed on the retired list and resided in Washington until his death. A monument to Admiral Steedman was erected at Arlington National Cemetery. (bio by: Saratoga)
