German stage and movie actor. In his 40-year-career, he appeared in more than 170 movies on the big screen as well as on TV and on stages in Germany and across Europe. He had his first movie role in the movie "Der Gasmann" in 1941, with Heinz Rühmann, just before he was drafted into the army. After the war he was a member of the ensemble at the Hebbel-Theatre in Berlin. In 1955 he became a regular actor at the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg under the direction of Gustav Gründgens. Due to his body size and shape he was often typecast as the villain or perpetrator. In the 1960's and 1970's he played in many international movie productions in Europe and the US. In his later years he was seen in more and more TV productions and back on stage. In Germany he was also known as the voice over actor for the likes of Lex Barker and Sam Shepard. In the 1980's he started to show progressive signs of Parkinson's disease and diabetes. His last role - in the German TV series "Forstinspektor Buchholz" (1989) - he played in a wheelchair. He was married twice and had two children. He is buried in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with his parents in the family plot.
