Singer. Rockin' Robin Roberts was born Lawrence Fewell Roberts II in New York City, but grew up in Tacoma, Washington. After graduating from Stadium High School in 1958, he began singing vocals for a local group, Little Bill and The Bluenotes. After the Bluenotes split up in 1959, he became a member of the Wailers. In 1961 the Wailers recorded a Jamaican sea shanty, "Louie, Louie", written by Richard Berry. Roberts' rendition of the song launched the era of the 60's garage band. After recording only six songs with the Wailers, Roberts returned to school to receive his master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Oregon. He moved to San Francisco in 1967 where he died in a car accident in December of that year.
