John Vanderlyn
Birth: Oct. 15, 1775
Death: Sep. 23, 1852

Artist. He was a protégé of politician Aaron Burr, who arranged for him to study with Gilbert Stuart and later sent him to Paris, where he remained for five years. Vanderlyn was the first notable American painter to be trained in France, and his style reflected the neoclassicism of the French academic manner. When he returned to the United States he lived for a time with Burr, and painted portraits of him and his daughter. He went on to portray various eminent men, including George Washington (for the US House of Representatives), James Monroe, John C. Calhoun, Governor Joseph C. Yates, Governor George Clinton, Andrew Jackson, and Zachary Taylor. Vanderlyn's best known painting is "The Landing of Columbus" (c. 1851), which took him approximately 10 years to complete; it now resides in the United States Capitol rotunda. He was often in debt, in part because he worked very slowly, and died bankrupt in Kingston.  (bio by: Donna)
